If you've just picked up your rental car, there's one thing every visitor needs to understand before hitting the road: Budapest changed its entire parking system on July 1, 2026. Coin meters are gone, prices went up, and everything now runs through your phone. Here's exactly what you need to know to park with confidence — and avoid an unpleasant fine on your windshield.
The Big Change: 100% Digital Parking
Every public parking space in the city now requires electronic payment through one of the following:
A mobile app (Parkl, Easypark are the most widely used)
Download your chosen app (Parkl is a solid default) and create an account.
Enter your rental car's license plate number under the vehicle/car settings — this is what the app uses to identify your vehicle to parking enforcement.
When you park, open the app, select the correct zone (either by tapping the map or searching the address), and confirm.
The session starts immediately and you'll get a push notification confirming it's active.
When you leave, end the session in the app — in some zones, forgetting to do this simply means you're charged until the app's automatic time limit kicks in, so it's worth making it a habit.
A few important details:
You cannot "reset the clock." In zones A, B, and C, once you hit the 3-hour maximum, you must physically move the car — starting a brand-new session in the same spot to extend your stay is not allowed under the new rules.
Signs are often in Hungarian only. Look for the zone letter (A/B/C/D) posted at the start of each street, along with the operating hours. If you're unsure, the parking app will confirm the zone and price the moment you try to start a session — this is actually the easiest way to double-check, since it pulls live data for your exact location.
Watch for "resident only" or permit-only signage, especially near embassies, hospitals, and certain inner-district streets — these are not part of the general paid-parking system and a rental car can be fined or towed regardless of app payment.
Weekend Parking: Mostly Free, With Exceptions
Good news for weekend sightseeing: standard public street parking across most of Budapest's zones is free on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as on public holidays. This covers the majority of downtown districts tourists usually stay in or visit.
The exception is the Castle District (Várnegyed). Unlike the rest of the city, parking there is chargeable every day of the week, weekends included — more on that below.
